To say the world is in an uncertain time would be an understatement. Now more than ever, I want to know I have my firearms safely stored for anything that life could throw at me.
When I was considering buying a new gun safe, I knew that I wanted a safe that was both secure and easily accessible, something that is difficult to balance. Out of all those that I have tested, one stands out: the RS500I safe from VAULTEK.

Overview
The RS500I is a roomy, safehouse-style firearm with lots of smart features. Initially, I was unsure about a gun safe that was connected to my Wi-Fi, but the features are intuitive and easy to use.
This safe is designed for those needing space for rifles, handguns, shotguns, or other similar long guns. The inside has a series of modular slots, similar to pegboard, but much more robust. This means that each interior is configurable to your needs. There are also magnetic accessories that can be added to the interior as well.
It is a gun safe built around safety and accessibility.
Wi-Fi Connectivity
The most prominent feature of this safe is the smart technology powering it. From the app, I can see every time the safe is opened, attempts on the keypad or biometric scanner, the level of power in the battery, temperature, humidity, and any impacts to the safe.
You may think that you will never use these features. I thought so too. But it only took one notification when my daughter bumped into the case to show me the power of these tools. The peace of mind is built-in, unlike my previous solution.
The safe is powered by a rechargeable battery but I have yet to recharge it. If it were to fail, there is still the option of entry via a manual key.
Construction
This safe measures 53.25″ X 13.75″ X 9.75″. It is made entirely of steel, 14-gauge carbon to be exact. The powder coat on both the inside and outside feels like a quality job, and I am confident it will last for a while. The door has both internal hinges and four stainless steel bolts acting as the locking mechanism.
As far as storage, I have six long guns and three handguns nicely tucked away with room for my ammo and optics as well. It comes with interior lighting, and a few modular parts included. You can also purchase more to add storage, as I did.
It is fireproof and waterproof, and being able to see the internal temperature and humidity is a huge plus. With all the money I have invested in my firearms, it is good to know they are in a climate-monitored setting.
Security Options
This case has four different points of entry. The first is a biometric scanner which I programmed with six of my fingers. It is quick and even has a light that comes on when you approach it. The second and third entry points are a backlit keypad (four to eight digits), and the manual keys.
The last is a “panic button” type fob that can be stuck to any surface within ten feet. I have it positioned discreetly inside my nightstand. It is quite a neat feature, and faster in some regards than the biometric fingerprint scanner.

Cons
- The initial package is lackluster in its modular pieces. I was required to buy more to fit my firearms comfortably.
- Price. This safe is far beyond competitor prices, especially for non-smart feature safes.
Bottom Line
If you are a gun owner who is looking for a safe and easy solution to storage problems, look no further. The quality, craftsmanship, and design are impeccable. This is a safe that I feel comfortable having in my home, even around my young kid. I know that they won’t be able to enter it, but it’s easy for me too.
What impressed me most about this safe is the multiple entry methods and modular storage. I can fit all my rifles, ammunition, and my sidearms in one place. It’s easy peace of mind.
My uncle has stored all of his firearms in a broken freezer in the basement, padlocked shut. That may work for some, but in my mind being able to access my guns with just a key fob is a game-changer.
The VAULTEK is a smart and rugged solution with just enough tech that it should make you question if it is time to upgrade your safe at home.
